Monitoring Defecation Activity of Infaunal Deposit Feeders
نویسنده
چکیده
An inexpensive, reliable thermistor device capable of monitoring infaunal foraging activity was built and used in the laboratory to examine effects of temperature on sedlment reworking by the maldanld polychaete Clymenella torquata. The worm defecated at least once per hour 55.0 % (12.0 "C) to 88.2 % (5.5 "C) of the time. Defecation rate was linearly and positively related to temperature. Estimated volume of sediment ejected per defecation (0.015 ml) did not change with temperature. Results are compared with previous reworking studies of C, torquata.

Benthic Studies in Buzzards Bay. I. Animal-Sediment Relationships
During October and November 1955 a bottom faunal study was undertaken at 19 localities in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. The number of animals ranged from 1,064 to 12,576/m2 with a mean number of 4,430. In comparison with certain other areas these numbers appeared small and seemed to be due to the relatively low concentrations of chemical nutrients and modest primary production of the region. Two...
متن کاملResponse of Trophic Groups of Macrobenthic Fauna to Environmental Disturbance Caused by Fish Farming
Sediment dynamics and the hydrodynamics of the environment cause the complexity and variability in animal-sediment relationship, both in spatial and temporal. This study is focused on the response of macrobenthic fauna to environmental disturbance caused by fish farming using their trophic structure. Their changes in trophic structure can be used as an indicator of disturbance. Eight control si...
متن کاملSediment Processing and Selective Feeding by Pectinaria koreni (Polychaeta: Pectinariidae)
Pectinaria (Lagis) koreni (Malmgren) is an abundant, deposit-feeding, infaunal inhabitant of shallow-water marine environments in northern Europe. Laboratory experiments were performed to quantify the polychaete's sediment processing in 2 distinct sediments, 1 fine-grained and high in combustibles, the other coarse-grained and low in combustibles. Gut passage time and time to pseudodefecation w...
متن کاملMean mixed depth of sediments: The wherefore and the why
The activities and consequently the bioturbational effects of deposit-feeding organisms are largely restricted to a narrow surficial zone of marine sediments with a worldwide, environmentally invariant mean of 9.8 cm with a standard deviation of 4.5 cm. Currently available theories of infaunal behavior cannot predict quantitatively this observation. A new simple model that accounts for the feed...
متن کاملMetabolism of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon fluoranthene by the polychaete Capitella capitata species I.
Previous studies have shown that infaunal deposit feeders may enhance the loss of organic contaminants from sediments. However, the extent to which this occurs as a result of sediment microbial stimulation, porewater flushing, or biotransformation by infauna remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the infaunal polychaete Capitella sp. I is able to metabolize the poly...
